Stitch a Story Rug Story Time with Alice Ever After

  • Stitch Buffalo 284 Plymouth Avenue Buffalo, NY, 14213 United States (map)

Stitch a Story Rug Story Time. 8/5, 6 pm

Be a part of this community collaboration to create a new story rug for Alice, Ever After Books. All families attending will receive a free book. We’ll be reading Story Rug by Sophie Blackall and Phoebe Wahl.

Story time will be followed by a braiding tutorial and group activity in the Stitch Buffalo studio.

The Book

"Story Rug" by Sophie Blackall and Phoebe Wahl is the story of how a classroom works together to braid materials and stitch together a rug for their own classroom. The kids use materials from their own homes - curtains, saris, tablecloths, shirts - so that their own lives and stories are in their collaborative work. Thanks to a generous sponsorship by children's author and illustrator Mike Ciccotello, every family who attends this event will get a free copy of the book.

The Braiding

Families who join us can drop off any fabric from their homes that they would like to be included in the rug by July 15. (see guidelines below) We will cut these into strips so that they are ready to be braided on August 5. Following story time, there will be a short tutorial on how to braid. Families can stay from 7 - 8 pm to braid or they can take a kit home, braid their strand, and return it to Stitch to be included in the rug.

The Rug

The week after the event at Stitch, we will have drop in stitching time. Folks can come by and help stitch strands together to form our rug. Stitching time is open to everyone - even if you weren't at the story time! We are excited to include your own fabrics from home into a new story rug for Alice, Ever After Books. This rug will replace the current rug at the shop. Every time we have a story time at the shop, your strands from your own family will be a part of our space.

Thanks to Mike Ciccotello, this entire event is FREE and it includes a book.
