Intermediate Machine Sewing: Quilted Witch Hat—September 17 and 24, 2026 (4:30–6:30pm)
Prerequisites:
This class is NOT for absolute beginners. Students should have completed Introduction to Machine Sewing at Stitch Buffalo or have equivalent experience.
ABOUT:
Halloween season calls for something special—like a one-of-a-kind witch hat! Working with your choice of fabrics, you’ll learn to sew a quilted witch hat (adult size with 22-inch headband) that will serve all your spooky needs for many years to come.
Enrollment fee includes pattern, tools, and supplies. Students may work on our studio sewing machines. If you choose to bring your own machine, please make sure it is in good working order and you are confident operating it.
Fabrics: This pattern can be made with whole cloth (the print or solid-colored fabric of your choice), whole cloth with appliqué patches, or pieced cloth. If you would like to use pieced fabric to create your hat, please come to class prepared with one yard (36×45 inches) of un-quilted, pieced fabric. (You can learn how to do this in one of our beginner machine quilting classes or English Paper Piecing [EPP] classes!)
INSTRUCTOR:
Kay Johnson holds a BA in Theater Design and works as a Dresser & Stitcher at Shea’s Theatre, where they repair and maintain costumes. Kay was a founding partner of the Houndstooth Costume Collective, where they constructed garments from commercial and hand-drafted patterns using a variety of materials, and altered existing pieces. Kay also enjoys teaching and has led numerous classes for students of all skill levels.

Stitch Buffalo is committed to fostering sustainability practices and reducing waste in the textile industry. In this workshop, we will strive to minimize waste and work as much as possible with supplies that have been rescued for reuse.
