This sequence of four weekly classes is ideal for less experienced sewists who want to learn the fundamentals of machine sewing through a few simple projects. Students will work on our studio sewing machines, so you don’t need to bring anything. The $125 class fee covers all four weeks of instruction plus use of our tools, fabrics, and supplies.

Classes will be held weekly on Wednesdays (Sepember 3, 10, 17, 24) 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Class projects and pacing may vary somewhat depending on the instructor and interests of the students.

Week 1—Basic setup/operation; practice seams; construct a simple drawstring bag
You will learn: The basic parts of a sewing machine, including how to select needle, thread, and feet; winding bobbins; threading the machine; and making basic adjustments to stitch length, style, and tension. After practicing a few simple seams, you will construct a simple drawstring bag using pre-cut materials.

Week 2—Learning seams, construct a market tote bag
You will learn: Seam finishing techniques (pinking, zig zag, French seams); adjusting for heavier fabric and multiple layers, marking techniques, and use of interfacing/stabilizer. Class members will learn to use a pattern and cut fabric to construct a market tote.

Week 3—Sew a lined, zippered pouch
You will learn: How to install a zipper and sew a simple pouch with a lining.

Week 4—Hand finishing skills, project completion, begin your next project
You will learn: Hand sewing techniques (buttons, hand hemming, blanket stitch, and basting). There will be time to finish any remaining projects or to sew either another zippered pouch or a pillow cover to reinforce learning.

INSTRUCTOR:
Michelle Frick has been sewing clothes for herself and others for decades. Her passion is supporting new and experienced sewists in the creation of beautiful, comfortable clothes that fit as great as they look. Over the last four years, Michelle has been working as a garment sewing instructor and has been immersed in research on the latest techniques and methods, including CAD pattern drafting, projector sewing, and sustainable sewing practices both in the home sewing and commercial fashion industries.
